Montbenault is no myth — it’s the playground of Benoît Lalanne, a new winemaker who spent three years alongside Richard Leroy before launching his own project in 2022. He took over 0.7 hectares on the Noëls de Montbenault hillside, a vineyard long farmed organically and previously tended by Joël Ménard of Domaine des Sablonnettes. In 2023, he added a parcel from Les Quarts des Noëls. The vines grow on light rhyolite soils rich in quartz, producing Chenin Blancs that are precise, saline, and full of energy. Farmed biodynamically with very low yields, hand-harvested without botrytis, pressed directly and aged for long periods without added sulfur, Benoît crafts wines of remarkable purity — shaped by the rock and tension of Montbenault’s volcanic terroir.Quantities are tiny, and lovers of sharp, vibrant Chenin will need to move fast.
